Phishing Activity:
Quarter over Quarter comparison:
August 1, 2020 - October 31 2020
November 1, 2020 - January 31, 2021

Key Statistics

Each reporting period, we analyze URLs, domain names, and IP addresses reported for phishing. We use these and other metadata – domain and IP address registration data, ICANN registry and registrar monthly reports, routing data, attack type, and other indicators – to report key statistics for each reporting period.

We analyzed over 450,000 phishing reports collected during the November 1, 2020 through January 31, 2021, a 48% increase over the previous August 1, 2020 - October 31, 2020 period.

The number of phishing attacks reported increased by 20%.

The number of domain names reported for phishing activity increased by 25%.

The number of brands targeted increased by 22%.

During the three-month period November 1, 2020 through January 2021, we noted a dramatic rise in the number of phishing reports, which is the number of URLs and domains that were collected from our phishing feeds during the study period — in other words, reports of newly found (reported) phishing incidents. The number of phishing attacks and the number of domain names used in phishing attacks increased significantly over the previous August 1, 2020 - October 31, 2020 period.

A comparison of key statistics from August 1, 2020 - October 31, 2020 and November 1, 2020 through January 2021appears in Table 1.
